Paul Sunstone and his blog Cafe of the Cosmic Dance (nude blogging Mondays *giggle*) has given me the gift of questions. On with the questions...
Today’s question is: What four to eight books, songs, pieces of music, movies, poems, or other works of art do you like most, and what do you most like about each one?
1) When I was a child, I kept my favorite books under my bed, and read bits and pieces of them almost every day. I still have one of my childhood ‘under bed books,’ though it’s on a book shelf now... *retrieves book from shelf*... It’s a paperback, the cover is ripped and taped, and the title is “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass” by Lewis Carroll. What a delightful fantasy. A fantasy with fascinating, dream-like connections to reality. To this day, when I’m suffering through an inane meeting (be it at work or any of the other concerns that I’m invested in) that lapses into nonsense, I can’t help but think of A Mad Tea Party, and how, after enduring as much as she could take, Alice ‘got up in great disgust, and walked off’- much as I wish I could in those situations. ‘...the last time she saw them, they were trying to put the dormouse into the teapot.’ Brilliant, compared to what goes on at some meetings... *laughs*
2) “Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs.” Funniest book ever. One would have to be a baby boomer, or older Gen X, to appreciate it, I suppose, since many of the songs cited (including The Worst Song in Modern History) hark from the ‘60s and ‘70s. But funny. Oh, so funny.
3) “The Big Questions- A Short Introduction to Philosophy” by Robert C. Solomon. I purchased this book last Spring. I was browsing in the ‘used book’ section of a local independent book store when I saw it. It is a text book, meant to be used along with a Philosophy class. I’d always wondered about philosophy. Religion (which is more or less a Philosophy for Dummies) was the closest I came to holding one personally. I wanted to know more... so I bought the book & studied it. Most satisfying and enlightening. Now I know what a ‘catagorical syllogism’ is. *smiles smugly*
4) Those are all books. On to music. I like modern alternative rock and hard rock. I like live music. I like fresh and edgy and vibrant. I usually can’t get anyone to go to concerts with me, so I go by myself. Solo Concert Adventures. I’ve got one on my calendar now- The Black Keys are coming to the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine, in March and I’ve got a ticket and a couple of approved vacation days. I love their song “Howlin’ for You.” I can’t wait!
5) Last, but not least, one other book. The Bible. I read it every day.
