“I can’t. It’s a surprise.”
I told him it was going to be a surprise, but he kept wheedling me for hints, throwing out guesses.
Dinner. Our evening meal. My husband is a picky eater, and I’ve decided to make something tonight that I’ve never made for him before. It’s morning, and I don’t want to give him time to mull the menu over and decide that he might not like it before he’s even tasted it.
The idea, you see, started with chicken. Canned chicken. There is only one reason that I purchase canned chicken, and that is to put in our ‘emergency supply’ food bin. Every house should have one, you know. That and a comprehensive first aid kit, and enough bottled water for about 3 days...
The problem with the food in the bin is that one has to keep track of the expiration dates. Even canned chicken does not last forever. As a side note- when I first put the box of supplies together, the product with the longest date was (drumroll, please) Spam.
Anyway, the canned chicken is approaching its expiration date.
And what I’m gonna do with it, you see, is first to make up some home-made biscuits. Mm. Home made biscuits. Not that BisQuick crap. Then I’m going to make a cream sauce. With butter and whole milk. To that I’m going to add the canned chicken. Mm. Creamed chicken on biscuits. With a vegetable on the side. Carrots, I think. If he liked peas, I’d put peas into the cream sauce mix and then it would be a balanced meal in one shot, but he doesn’t like peas.
Shh... its a surprise.

Aaah, you can cook for me any time. I'm going through a cummin seed phase, but any spices are good.
I used to cook for a living, tried one of everything, don't think there is a food I don't like, if it's cooked well.
One day, when I get to Bear Country, I'm going to demand a feeding!
I'd love to cook for you! I'm a very accomplished cook, in a down-home sort of way. I made a soup tonight that has the taste of autumn to it- I found the recipe in Prevention Magazine, and it includes pumpkin and apple, cinnamon and nutmeg, sausage & other yummy ingredients. It's DELICIOUS!
Yum!
We don't get proper seasons here, not like there. Because the country is so big we grow just about everything all year 'round. I like the idea of waiting for food to come around again, season by season, seems natural.
One thing that is no good in winter is asparagus, just hitting the shops now, can't wait.
I can taste the biscuits now and they sound delicious. Reminds me of the chipped beef on toast we used to have as a kid. :-)
