Kent Parkstreet (venerable follower of mine and damn good blogger) and I have been having a conversation about the relationship between 'looks' and 'attractiveness.' Since I happen to have written a poem on that very subject I feel the urge to post it again...
An Ugly Shell
I want an ugly shell.
Put on your bathing suit,
And help me search-
For an ugly shell.
Toss aside the pretty,
And the perfect,
Please-
Common combers
Collect the comely.
The shell I want
Would never win
At American Idol.
Place it to your ear, my dear.
If Simon Cowell
Would smile and say,
“This is the worst shell
I have ever heard,”
Keep it
As a contender.
Quirky,
Colorful,
Battered, Bold and Broken
Beat Beauty
In my book
So help me look
For an Ugly Shell.

Common combers collect the comely? Sweet!
I'm reminded of My Funny Valentine, Your looks are affable, Unphotographable, Yet you're my favourite work of art. And reminded of an Australian poet, Kenneth Slessor, You find it ugly, I find it lovely, writing about the people in the area of Sydney I live in.
You have a light touch with a touchy subject.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I'm glad you like it!
I like it, and agree with it. The message of Punk that got lost in the hype.
I like the battered, bold, and broken -- three of a kind beats whatever beauty has in its hand. :-)
