Sometimes she’s a laugh and a half. My daughter. She’s been gently chided and guided enough to have learned to subtly turn the tables... and enjoys doing just that when the opportunity presents itself.
Take the matter of music. When she and I are traveling together in the car, we fight over control of the radio buttons. She likes light pop... I like alternative rock. I say light pop makes me want to ‘hurl‘, and she says there’s too much screaming and naughty language going on with my music.
Not long ago I happened to absentmindedly use a vulgar expression in her presence, and she chided me sternly, saying, “Mom, it’s that music you listen to. It’s having a bad influence on you!”
And then there was the matter of MTV. I like to watch music videos occasionally, and, while it’s not my daughters first choice for viewing, she sometimes watches with me. Saturday morning I co-opted the remote and changed the channel.
We watched for a while, and at one point she said, “This song’s not so good. Change the channel, OK?”“The song’s not my favorite,” I said, “But the singer’s cute. I like to watch him.”“But Mom,” she said seriously, looking a little puzzled, “You’re married. You shouldn’t be saying things like that!”
“I’m married, not dead.” I replied, “I can look.”Not giving up that easily on a chance to admonish me, she thought for a moment, alternately studying me and the cutie on TV.
“But Mom,” she said sternly, “You look WAY too much!”
