Oops. I just pressed 'post' by mistake. Then again maybe it was subconscious. Maybe I want to write. I think I'll write about taffy.
I worked the weekend, and though I was tired this morning and had an appointment to get my hair cut at 10:00am, I was determined to make taffy before 10.
Molasses taffy.
You see, today was Bake-Off day and the challenge was 'anything molasses.' Years and years ago my daughter and I made molasses taffy, and though she didn't like it very much I found it delicious to the point of being addictive. That particular recipe was long gone, so I summoned one from the internet.
I'm always hesitant about making hard candy, because boiling the sugar mix up to the right temp is tricky. Up to now I'd always used the 'drop a bit into cold water and see how hard it gets' method. This time however, I used a candy thermometer. Can't go wrong, right? Wrong. It reached the stated temp, I poured the hot syrup onto a baking sheet, and it was way too soupy. I even scraped it back into the pan to boil it down further, but that didn't work either. Even cool, it never achieved a candy consistency. I texted a co-worker to say that my molasses recipe flopped, and to carry on without me.
I got a text back letting me know that no one else managed to make molasses anything either, and that the bake-off had been postponed till Wednesday. I guess the taffy was destined not to be.
So I went to get my hair cut. Not cut, exactly- just trimmed. I'm a cheap-skate when it comes to my hair. A lazy cheap-skate. I only wash it twice a week, and get it trimmed twice a year. Then again, it seems to me that the more time/money a woman spends on her hair, the worse it looks. Natural is good.
I think I'll make Oatmeal Molasses Bread for the bake-off. I don't think I've ever screwed bread up.
