Gray-Green

Stop it. Stop looking at me like that.

Staring. Smiling, like a cat playing with a mouse.

Eating me with his eyes.

Large gray-green eyes...

He was trying to break my concentration as I ran through the usual consultation points regarding the antibiotic that I was dispensing to him.

I could have looked away- unilaterally broken the connection- but I am too proud and defiant to surrender using a tactic that would have communicated ‘shyness’ and ‘embarrassment.’

He never wavered.

I almost stumbled.

Almost. I breathed a mental sigh of relief as I come to the end of my little professional speech, and looked down to place the vial into the paper bag.

I ended, as I always do, by asking him if he had any questions.

He did not.
