Staring. Smiling, like a cat playing with a mouse.
Eating me with his eyes.

He was trying to break my concentration as I ran through the usual consultation points regarding the antibiotic that I was dispensing to him.
I could have looked away- unilaterally broken the connection- but I am too proud and defiant to surrender using a tactic that would have communicated ‘shyness’ and ‘embarrassment.’
He never wavered.
I almost stumbled.
Almost. I breathed a mental sigh of relief as I come to the end of my little professional speech, and looked down to place the vial into the paper bag.
I ended, as I always do, by asking him if he had any questions.
He did not.
